Have you ever had a conversation with an entrepreneur?
No, not the side-hustle type…
The full time, “this is my entire life and if it doesn’t work out, I am in deep trouble” type.
I have a good friend of mine is one of those...
If you asked him, he would tell you the single most grueling and unglamorous thing he has to deal with on a daily basis is how unpredictable business can get.
“Makena, it seems like every day, I have to always put out some kind of fire! Sometimes I have no clue how things are going to pan out.” He told me once.
Right now, you might be experiencing the same exact emotions that keep hardcore entrepreneurs up at night:
The unpredictability of life, and the unforeseeable future we now face.
Up until this year, the world has been relatively tolerable for you.
Even the issues you had to combat or the media bombarded you with, you managed to compartmentalize and sort through.
It Really Was All Good Just A Few Months Ago...
You had a certain level of certainty in your life.
- you had a place of work to go to every morning, even if it was in your house!
- a steady source of income to take care of your loved ones and pay the bills
- a social life you carved out in between all the societal demands and obligations.
You had your own system all figured it out and it was working just fine for you!
Even if you may have not been happy, you unconsciously lay your proverbial head on a “pillow” of comfort, security and assurance that tomorrow would look relatively the same as yesterday and the day before.
But 2020 showed up to throw us off our well-manicured utopia of normalcy, toss us all in hand-baskets and take us on a trip straight to hell!
Suddenly, just like a full time entrepreneur, you have to deal with enormous uncertainty… putting out fires you have no idea where they originated from!
You don't know what the fate of your job is.
You don't know how safe you or your loved ones are against the world-wide crisis we are currently facing.
You have realized that some obstacles you are currently dealing with simply do not have ready-made, shared answers that you can find on Facebook.
Yes, it is terrifying…
The idea that we are now living in a world that no longer makes sense.
When what you have relied on for most of your life threatens to slowly disappear, it is an understandable cause for sleepless nights.
Every single day that passes, you might be asking yourself “will we ever go back to normal?”
But herein lies the opposite question you have also been asking yourself that lies on the other side of this coin…
What if things never go back to normal?
Is it really the ultimate gloom and doom that the rest of the world wants us to believe?
Or could there be incredibly powerful lessons this predicament is teaching you?
Lessons that you are learning unknowingly, that might shape your future in a way you never thought about or expected at all?
Here Are 5 Such Lessons You Are Unaware That You’re Learning That Could Make You Very Successful In The Next Chapter Of Your Life
1: You are learning to rely on yourself (more now than ever before)
Now more than ever, you have come to realize that for some questions, you won’t find the answers.
Not anytime soon anyway.
You have slowly started to adjust to this new world, and perhaps you are relying less and less on your unease and disquiet.
You may be slowly coming to the conclusion that you are significantly stronger than you give yourself credit for…
That even in these difficult times, you can actually depend on yourself to figure things out.
Your new discovery has not only offered a new form of comfort, but a renewed sense of confidence in what you’re capable of.
2: You Are Learning To Deal With Uncertainty.
Tony Robbins came up with 6 basic needs a human being needs to be happy and successful in life.
One of these 6 core needs is certainty which he describes as “the need to feel in control and to know what’s coming next so we can feel secure.”
You may be discovering that there are different ways you can feel certainty, including the certainty of change.
You might be unaware that you are preparing your mind for the next unexpected event, which is making you more alert, flexible and is sharpening your ability to find solutions more rapidly.
3: You Are Learning To Create Your Own New System
You may have had no choice with this one.
When your government tells you that schools are closed and you have to stay at home, you have to do just that.
I bet in the beginning it was incredibly difficult to adjust to not going anywhere.
Your mind was probably screaming for you to go back to the routine it was used to.
But you realized soon enough that nothing would be the same.
Since then, you have learnt to familiarize yourself with the newness of everything.
You have realized there are other ways to live and new routines you can create.
And though they were really difficult in the beginning, and might still be challenging today, you have done it. You have learnt to create a new system of your own for you and your loved ones to live in.
Now that’s powerful!
4: You are learning to stretch your threshold of pain
When my sister came to visit us with her family in August of last year, she made the decision to dye her short hair blond.
Naturally, she had a very specific style she wanted and she showed me the picture.
I am not a fan of salons but I had to accompany her for this one!
We got to the salon and found the stylist she had booked an appointment with.
She proceeded to sit on the cool swivel type chair as she proceeded to explain to the stylist what she wanted as she did with me.
The stylist nodded her head to show that she understood the instructions, and the procedure began.
To cut a long story short, it didn’t pan out the way she wanted.
Her hair turned out to be bright orange!
Now the outcome couldn’t be reversed for another few weeks.
I absolutely loved it! She desperately loathed it!
But with time, my sister grew (pun intended) to really love her new hair status! She even told me the other day she can’t wait to do it again!
So what is the moral of my drawn out story?
Life sometimes puts us in positions we couldn’t get out of… although my sister’s story is different because she CHOSE the position she found herself in... but you get the picture, right?
In the last 3 months or so, you’ve had to contend with fewer options, restricted movements, not being able to indulge in the pleasures and delights that life has to offer.
Indeed it has been a painful experience to adjust to, and it probably almost drove you insane in the beginning!
But look at you now…
You have made the necessary sacrifices, you have learnt how to compromise and live with what you otherwise thought was a terrible mental and emotional prison.
You can stretch the limits of what you can endure, and this discovery alone will prepare you for future encounters that you will be much more prepared for!
5. You are learning to re-define yourself.
2020 has done something remarkable for us.
It has broken a deep pattern we got very used to of living on auto-pilot.
By auto-pilot in this case, I mean living life with very little consciousness.
Like I wrote earlier, we were fine with our daily rituals and routines, not knowing whether they were helping or hindering us from our own personal growth and evolution.
2020 has presented you with the opportunity to look at all aspects of your life and question them.
- Are you happy with your job?
- Are you okay with the people in your life and how they treat you?
- Is there something you want to pursue that you forgot about or were too afraid to do?
- What do you really want?
You may have asked yourself one of these questions recently.
Perhaps not at all.
But you cannot deny that 2020 has given you the opportunity to slow down and re-define yourself, your relationships and where you are in your life right now.
If you have started this journey, kudos to you, because you are in the process of architecting and re-designing your life.
2020 Could Change Your Life For The Better (If You Choose To See It That Way)
Hopefully this article has persuaded you to look at your current circumstances through a different lens.
You have discovered that this just might have been a blessing in disguise.
A year that has taken you through the “School of Hard Knocks” in a sense, where you have been forced to adjust, acclimate and adapt.
Could it be that with these lessons, you will now have exactly what you need to overcome and master new challenges?
To pursue new horizons that you have never considered before?
I honestly believe you have it in you.
Instead of waiting for this “dreaded” year to end, you could choose to walk out a graduate of the Class Of 2020 renewed, strengthened, smarter and more courageous.
This could just be the year that defines your success in the future, because as we all know…
There is no growth when you remain in your comfort zone!
